Every industry with a complex supply chain has built operational infrastructure to manage it. Logistics has freight management systems. Manufacturing has supply chain software. Financial services has trading and settlement platforms. Healthcare has clinical trial management systems.
Market research has email.
Why the Gap Exists
The absence of an operational infrastructure layer in market research is not an oversight. It has structural explanations.
The incumbents had no incentive to build it
The large agency networks — Kantar, Ipsos, Nielsen — have the capital to build operational tools. But their revenue model is built on research delivery, not operational efficiency. Tools that reduce the labour input required for fieldwork would reduce their billable hours. The incentive to build is absent.
The panel suppliers have a conflict of interest
Dynata, Cint, Lucid — the major panel suppliers — operate on the supply side of the transaction. An operational platform that helps agencies negotiate lower CPIs from panel suppliers would be a platform that works against its own builders. The incentive is not just absent — it is inverted.
The survey platforms serve a different layer
Qualtrics, Forsta, Decipher are survey authoring and data collection tools. Their layer ends at the questionnaire and the dataset. The supplier coordination layer — upstream of where their product begins — is outside their scope and, increasingly, outside their strategy.
The problem required a specific vantage point
Building the right operational platform for market research fieldwork requires understanding it from the inside — knowing what a PM needs at 9am on a Monday with fourteen live studies and a supplier who hasn't responded to the RFQ. That understanding does not come from a product team doing user interviews. It comes from having lived it.
The infrastructure gap is not permanent. It is a structural consequence of how the industry developed — and it is the defining commercial opportunity for any company built specifically to fill it.
